BEVERLY HILLS, California — As you read this, “New Moon” has the biggest opening weekend of 2009, will certainly rake in millions more this weekend and could possibly go on to become the highest-grossing film of the year. In short, it’s a very good time to be Robert Pattinson.
Recently, the man otherwise known as Edward Cullen sat down with MTV Radio for a frank chat about life in both Hollywood and Forks, Washington. If you can spare 10 minutes between trips to the theater for repeat viewings, read on to learn RPattz’s thoughts about his director, the hardest “New Moon” scenes to shoot, and the most romantic thing he’s ever done.
MTV: Tell us about working with Chris Weitz. What were your thoughts when you first received his now-famous “orientation guide”?
Robert Pattinson: When he gave that out, it was such [a surprise]; I mean, I’d never had that from any director. It was 40, 50 pages long, this thing. And this is in addition to a bunch of letters and e-mails and everything [he had sent the cast], trying to show that he’s on the same page as us and he’s completely with us in making the film. And he didn’t falter from that attitude throughout the whole movie. It probably sounds ridiculous how much praise this guy gets. I was just with his wife and him in Japan, and she was even sick of it! But he is like a saint. He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met, let alone directors. I think in a lot of ways that shows in the movie — it’s got a lot of heart.
MTV: Since you’re only in parts of the film, did you feel disjointed from your castmates? Did you wish Edward was in “New Moon” more?
Pattinson: Those [hallucination] scenes were the hardest scenes. They weren’t really at the time, but when I saw the first cut of the movie, I was like, [we need to re-do this]; we’ve changed them quite a bit in the edit and ADR, mainly because it’s so difficult. It’s not Edward who you’re playing, it’s a manifestation of Bella’s loneliness and desperation. That was always very difficult — I was trying to ask Kristen, “How would you play it?” As for being alone, I think I’ve always felt a little bit aloof as the character throughout the whole series. I think that’s how he is.
MTV: But do you appreciate Edward more with each movie?
Pattinson: It’s funny, because when I read “New Moon,” it gave me ideas about how to play him in the first one. It’s the one I connected to the most, and the one that humanized Edward for me the most. In the first one, he remains from beginning to end an idealistic character; in the second one, he makes a mistake that’s acknowledged by everybody, including himself. He’s totally undermined by more powerful creatures, and he’s undermined emotionally by people as well. I think that’s what humanized it.
MTV: Are you a romantic person in real life?
Pattinson: I haven’t done that many romantic things in my life … I like the romantic scenes. I felt like a lot of the story line in “New Moon” is very heartbreaking and true. And I didn’t think I was doing something just for the sake of romance. In a lot of ways, it’s a very sad story. Hmmm … what’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever done?
MTV: Have you ever serenaded anybody?
Pattinson: Oh no [laughs]. I don’t think that would ever be romantic. You have to have so much balls to do that. I actually can’t think of the most romantic thing I’ve ever done. I put a flower in someone’s locker when I was 15 years old, this girl Maria. Maybe I was 14. Anyway, she thought it was somebody else. And the other guy claimed it [was him], which was great.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon has been in cinemas for almost a week. So, depending on your feelings towards sparkly vampires and extremely buff werewolves, you will either have seen it three times already (ZOMG RPattz!) or avoided it altogether. Either way, the fandemonium has subsided enough for us to look to the future. It’s just seven months until Eclipse, the third instalment of Stephenie Meyer’s popular book series, hits the big screen. RT caught up with the cast in LA’s Four Seasons hotel during their manic New Moon press tour to get the latest on the eagerly anticipated film. We learned that Robert Pattinson hates pranks, that Nikki Reed loves werewolves and that we may just see a fifth film. Read on to find out more…
Fact #1: It’s Darker
The brand new poster for Eclipse (above) hints at a darker tone with its brooding storm clouds. With 30 Days of Night director David Slade at the helm, it’s unsurprising. “Every movie is different because we work with a different director on each one, which I love,” Taylor Lautner tells RT. “David Slade is perfect for the third film because it’s darker. Eclipse was my favourite book.”
Ashley Greene, who plays vampire Alice, tells RT that Slade isn’t just a prince of darkness. “David is actually hysterical,” she laughs, “He has such a dry sense of humour that sometimes you don’t know if he’s kidding or not. Eclipse will be amazing because he has made it far edgier and more dramatic. It’s going to look very cool.”
Fact #2: There Will Be Less “Love Story” and More “War”
“Eclipse isn’t as intimate as Twilight or New Moon,” Robert Pattinson explains to us. “We’re at war, so I get to interact with more characters, not just Kristen. You’ll also find out more about the other members of the Cullen family. It just feels bigger.” But — fear not, Twihards — that isn’t to say the love story is cast aside altogether. “New Moon set up a love triangle with Bella, Edward and Jacob,” says Lautner. “So we explore that further in Eclipse. It’s a tough situation for all of them because Bella is torn between two guys, Jacob can’t get the girl that he loves and then there’s Edward, with all of his issues.”
Fact #3: The Werewolves Will Crank Up the Sex Appeal
“We all know the appeal of the vampire family,” says Nikki Reed, who plays vampire Rosalie. “But the werewolf boys are on a whole different level. They interact with a youthful, playful, comfortable warmth. It’s very sexy.”
As for Pattinson, he admits that his personal jealousy about Taylor Lautner’s newly-ripped physique actually comes in handy for the role. “In Eclipse, Taylor and I have lots of scenes together where we have to be jealous and petty with each other,” he says. “So it helps that I actually do feel inadequate when I see his body, especially because he’s younger than me. He fulfills every criteria of what teenage girls want, physically, in a guy. I felt like a had to prove myself against him.”
Fact #4: There’s More Action
“Filming Eclipse actually changed my life,” says Nikki Reed of the arduous training regime the cast had to endure. “I have never been so fit — this is the first time in my life I have actually had a bicep. It’s bizarre to compare how we look now to how we all looked in the first movie. The entire cast turned up on set for Eclipse looking super-buff.”
New cast member Bryce Dallas Howard tried to play a prank on the crew during one stunt, but she didn’t count on Pattinson’s awkwardness. “We had a fight scene where Bryce had to grab my hair,” he laughs. “So she took a clump of hair from my stunt double’s wig and was going to pretend she had pulled it from my head. She told me to scream and storm off set, but it was so embarrassing. She had this huge clump of hair in her hand, and I was like ‘oww,’ really unconvincingly.”
While the rest of the cast were having fun with stunts, spare a thought for poor Taylor Lautner. “Eclipse is a lot more physical for my character,” he explains, “but any time I have any kind of action, I’m a wolf, so it’s all done with CGI. It’s a bummer.”
Fact #5: The Ending Will Be Nicely Set Up For a Fourth – And Perhaps Fifth – Film
There are four books in The Twilight Saga: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. But Ashley Greene gave RT the strongest indication yet that there might be five films. “We have finished filming Eclipse and one would assume that, if New Moon does as well as Twilight, then we’ll start filming Breaking Dawn next year,” she says.
“The only thing is, Breaking Dawn is a very large book so it would be a really long movie. We’re thinking they might decide to split it into two parts, like they did with Harry Potter. Either way, we need to get on with shooting them because, unlike Harry Potter, vampires don’t age. So we all need to look the same!”

Robert Pattinson has a Christmas surprise planned for Kirsten Stewart — the New Moon hunk is planning to take his love to the English countryside for the holidays.
“He’s enlisted the help of his mom, Clare, to find a cottage where he and Kris can spend a few days together,” an insider reveals OK! in the issue currently on sale now.
Sources say the two will already be in England to spend the holidays with Rob’s parents who are over the moon for Kristen.
Kristen first met the Pattinsons in May for Rob’s 23rd birthday dinner in Vancouver while filming New Moon. Rob also flew his parents to Paris during this month’s New Moon promotional tour where the foursome enjoyed another intimate dinner together.
“They think she’s perfect for Rob and told her they’d like her to join them for Christmas dinner,” the source says.

Forget the supernatural: In Kristen Stewart’s next project, the New Moon star is taking a deeply human turn, playing a troubled teenager in the indie flick The Yellow Handkerchief, due in theaters in February.
Costarring William Hurt, Mario Bello and Eddie Redmayne, the movie explores the relationships between three strangers who embark on a road trip through post-Katrina Louisiana. Stewart plays Martine, a teen who hopes to escape her family, while Hurt plays Brett Hanson, a man who has to choose between his ex-wife (played by Bello) or what’s next.
“The part of Kristen in Twilight is completely different from the one she plays in The Yellow Handkerchief, which is particularly interesting for Kristen’s fans all over the world,” says the film’s Oscar winning producer Arthur Cohn. “In my personal opinion, from a pure acting point of view, The Yellow Handkerchief was a more difficult part to play.”
Cohn says that Stewart got the part thanks to the recommendation of one famous former costar.
“It was Jodie Foster, whom I respect and admire, who wholeheartedly recommended Kristen,” he says of her Panic Room costar, “and has always considered her a truly excellent young actress.”

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner have taken to Twitter to thank fans for the New Moon mania sweeping the country.
The eagerly awaited Twilight sequel took top box office honors last weekend, pulling in a whopping $140 million – which could make it the top-grossing film of 2009.
Pattinson, 23, who plays sexy vampire Edward Cullen, gave a shout out to fans on Twilight’s Twitter page, writing, “Thank you for making NEW MOON #1,” It’s very exciting to be a part of something embraced by so many people.”
Pattinson adds: “I hope you are looking forward to ECLIPSE as much as I am.”
Stewart, 19, who plays Bella Swan, then Tweeted, “You all have proven you’re the most amazing fans in the world once again. I feel so lucky to be a part of The Twilight Saga and thank you for making us #1!”
Stewart is still getting the hang of Twitter, she admitted. “Yes, I twittered,” she wrote. “Or twitted … tweeted? I dunno, but thank you sooo much anyway..!”
Lautner, who plays werewolf Jacob, “Thanks for your incredible support of New Moon.”

If you’ve been living under a rock (or you’re just now emerging from the local movie theater where you’ve spent the last three days watching “New Moon” repeatedly), then perhaps you don’t know that the “Twilight” sequel debuted this weekend with one of the biggest openings ever.
In the wake of such news, fan favorite Michael Welch swung by the MTV studios Monday morning (November 23) to give us his first interview following the film’s massive success. With an extra bounce in his step and an ear-to-ear grin on his face, the actor who plays Mike Newton in the series was eager to talk about “Twilight” entering the ranks of the biggest franchises of all time.
“I’m feeling great,” he said. “I feel really good. The night the movie opened, Friday night, Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter, threw a big ‘Twilight’ party at some fancy place ion Hollywood. As soon as I went in, I was talking to one of my buddies from Summit, and he was like, ‘Just guess what we made from the midnight screening and the one day.’ I was like, ‘$35 million,’ being generous. My girlfriend said, ‘$50 million,’ and I looked at her like she was crazy. He goes, ‘$70 million!’ and I just started laughing uncontrollably. To get those kinds of numbers, it means that many people must have seen the film at least three times by the end of opening day!
“That is insane,” he added. “And I love it.”
With that in mind, we hit the actor fans affectionately refer to as “Mike/Mike” with a few of the “New Moon” record-setting feats of accomplishment and got his thoughts on what it means for the current state of “Twilight” Nation:
The Most Presold Tickets of Any Movie, Ever: “That says that the anticipation was obviously very high, and we knew going into it that the presales would be out of control. So we did anticipate a somewhat successful opening weekend, but that says it all to me. … ‘Lord of the Rings’ had a following for years and years before those movies came out [and didn't do this]. There wasn’t that much of a gap between when [the 'Twilight'] books were written and the movies came out. To generate that kind of excitement in that short a period of time is amazing. ”
The Highest-Grossing Midnight Screening Total of All Time ($26.3 million): “That’s amazing. That’s crazy. And it’s surprising, considering that so much of our fanbase are young kids out late on a Thursday night. I don’t know if kids were skipping school on Friday or what, but still, I’m glad to have them. I would never condone kids skipping school, but thank you. I do appreciate it.”
Best Single-Day Tally of All Time ($72.7 million on Friday): “[Previous record-holder] ‘The Dark Knight’ is incredible. I saw it three times, once in IMAX, so I helped contribute to that. It was a similar circumstance in that it was the sequel to a popular film. … I think a lot of people [discovered both franchises on DVD]. We maintain our original fanbase but have more and more people jumping on. I’m sure it will be even more for ‘Eclipse.’ It’s just a snowball at this point.”
Third-Biggest Opening Weekend Ever ($140.7 million): “Wow, cool. … I’m reaching for [all-time box-office champ] ‘Titanic.’ That’s my goal. It has a lot of the same elements, that romantic element that I think keeps people coming back, particularly the girls. ‘New Moon’ was written in direct homage to ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and follows many of the same themes and structure. … [Shooting the film,] I felt like I was a witness to history.”
More Than $118 Million in Foreign Territories: “This is the craziest thing about being in movies in general. You have no idea who is watching you across the world. … It blows my mind, people watching these movies that I’m lucky enough to be in. [The 'Twilight' films] have international appeal, because these are universal, human themes. And that’s what it’s about at the end of the day: telling stories that touch people and move the human spirit. That has no borders.”
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have remained coy about their relationship, but the New Moon costars looked awfully close over the weekend in New York City – even though they’re done promoting their hit movie. On Thursday, while their castmates were partying after their Big Apple premiere at the Box on New York’s Lower East Side, Pattinson and Stewart took a tour of the city’s hotspots together.
he duo started their night at the ultra exclusive Soho House, where they “had a good time,” a source tells PEOPLE. Later, they skipped over to Avenue, where they were spotted making out while their bodyguards tried to block prying eyes. The two also hung out with Joan Jett, who joined them at their table.
On Saturday night the two were spotted getting close at Dive Bar, on the Upper West Side – and they stayed out late. A source spotted the duo around 3 a.m. with their bodyguard in tow.
Finally, on Sunday, the two closed out their weekend with dinner at Megu in Tribeca. Pattinson dined on Kobe beef skewers and asparagus, while Stewart ordered a sashimi platter and the king crab. “They were with two friends and looked very cozy,” says a source. “Both were having a great time.”
